Women's Tennis: Mountaineers Open at Maryland

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team tallied key victories in the Maryland Invite on Friday, Sept. 23, 2005.
West Virginia’s Monica Lyskawa defeated Notre Dame’s Kelly Nelson 6-3, 6-2 in round one. But her biggest win of the day came against Yale’s No.1 Aimee Kim. Lyskawa now advances to play in the semifinal round against Amy Toth from Washington State.
“Monica is playing the best tennis she’s ever played,” head coach Dan Silverstein said. “We hope she can bring home a championship on Sunday.” Natalia Prinz defeated Washington State’s Aleksandra Stesnova in her first match before losing to No. 3 Julia Graca from Maryland in three sets.
Ashley Constantine shut out Ashley Flynn from Washington State in two sets 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinal match, Constantine was defeated by the No.1 LSU seed Daysi Espinal.
Catherine Koontz lost in three sets to Bianca Selara of Washington State.
Stacey Percival lost to Washington State’s Aleksandra Cekic before having a bye in the backdraw. Senior Raynie Theis also had a bye in the backdraw after losing to Olivia Nik from Yale.
Kelly Walsh lost her two matches of the day to LSU and Washington State.
Colleen Speaker was forced to retire from her match with Amriolein Van de Ven due to an illness.
In doubles action, Prinz and Theis defeated Selaru-Toth of Washington State 9-7 to advance to the semifinals tomorrow. The match between Constantine-Koontz and Flynn-Konomos of Washington State resulted in a victory for West Virginia, winning 8-1 and advancing to the semifinals.
Lyskawa-Walsh were defeated by Washington State’s Ceki- Van de Ven. Speaker- Percival were unable to play due to Speaker’s illness.
“We had some outstanding doubles play today from all the girls and hopefully tomorrow we can keep getting better,” Silverstein said.
The Mountaineers continue play in the Maryland Invite tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 23.
“Our girls played extremely well today,” Silverstein said. “We were able to get key wins over some very high caliber teams. But I think we’ll play even better tomorrow.”
