MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to South Florida in its BIG EAST home opener on Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (4-4-0, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) and Bulls (4-3-0, 3-0-0) played to a nearly even first half until less than one minute remained in the period. With only 28 seconds on the clock USF’s Chris Raad hit Sammy Castellanos with a pass 10 yards out from the goal and the midfielder snuck a shot past goalkeeper Nick Noble.
West Virginia had several promising chances after halftime, however, the team could not seem to put together a string of passes that would penetrate the South Florida back line.
WVU kept Bulls’ goalkeeper Dane Brenner busy all night as they forced him to make six saves in the match. The Mountaineers out-shot South Florida 12-11 in all, but were just not able to get an equalizer before time expired.
Noble recorded three saves in his outing.
West Virginia returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 25, when it faces DePaul in the first ever meeting between the two schools as part of Super Soccer Sunday. The match will begin at approximately 3 p.m. at the conclusion of the women’s game against St. John’s.
