RICHMOND, Va. - The 20th-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team posted its first tie in two years on Friday evening, tying Richmond 1-1 in double overtime at First Market Field.
The Mountaineers' last tie came on October 19, 2003, when they finished deadlocked 0-0 against Villanova.
Richmond (2-3-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just four minutes into the contest on a header from Jessie Wolfe following a West Virginia penalty outside the 18 yard box. Hillary Price played a direct kick to the center of the goal mouth where Wolfe was waiting for the score.
The Mountaineers (3-3-1) took 14 shots on the night, but it wasn’t until the 81st minute that they turned one of those opportunities into a score. Sophomore Natalie Cocchi played a short cross into the box and freshman Deana Everrett headed the ball past Spider goalkeeper Kelly Folker for her third goal of the season.
With 4:37 remaining in the match, Cocchi scored what appeared to be the game-winner when she slid a head ball past Folker off a corner kick from senior Marisa Kanela. However, the official waved the goal off, calling a foul on the Mountaineers.
Neither team could muster a score in each of the ensuing 10 minute overtime periods, ending the match after the 110th minute.
"A lot of character came out tonight,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown following the match. “I am proud of how the girls responded to being down early and then having a goal taken away. We battled tonight and now it’s time to refocus and prepare for William & Mary.”
WVU returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m., when it takes on William & Mary in a regional contest.
