Indianola, Pa. - The 10th-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team lost its BIG EAST opener, 2-1, at Pitt on Thursday night at Founders Field.
The Mountaineers notched the match’s first score in the 21st minute when pressure by junior Cathy Abel resulted in sophomore Kiley Harris getting fouled in the box. Senior Marisa Kanela scored her second goal of the season after easily placing the penalty kick past Panther goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi.
Less than a minute later, Pitt freshman Jennifer Kritch intercepted a pass in the West Virginia defensive third and hit a quick shot from 20 yards out, beating WVU goalkeeper Lana Bannerman to her left side.
The match remained 1-1 until the 70:25 mark when Kritch struck again, taking on several Mountaineer defenders to score the game-winner.
West Virginia had 17 shots in the match and forced Pelusi to make 11 saves, but were unable to turn any of its scoring opportunities into scores. The Mountaineers also had six corner kicks to the Panthers three.
With the loss, WVU falls to 1-2-0 and 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday when No. 23 Tennessee visits Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium for a 1 p.m., match.
