Morgantown, W.Va. – The No.11 West Virginia University women’s soccer team fell 3-1 to Maryland in exhibition action on Saturday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Lightning delayed the match midway through the first half, but that did not stop Maryland from scoring twice early, once on a corner kick and once on a shot from 20 yards out to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
The Terps struck again, this time on a 35-yard shot halfway through the second period to bump the score to 3-0.
West Virginia notched its only goal of the match when Ashley Banks sent a long ball to a charging Deana Everrett who one-timed a shot past the Maryland keeper.
“I have to give credit to how Maryland played today,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “They finished well.
“We gained a lot out of today’s match,” Izzo-Brown continued. “We were able to put some people in some different positions and work toward finding a starting lineup. We saw some strengths and some weaknesses and we’ll be able to use that to prepare for the regular season.”
The Mountaineers officially wrap up preseason tomorrow and classes begin on Monday.
“We’re looking forward to opening the regular season next week. We gained a lot from these two scrimmages and things are starting to come together,” Izzo-Brown said.
West Virginia opens regular season play on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m., when it plays host to Dayton at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
