Men's Basketball: Gansey, USA to Play for Gold

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –– WVU basketball player Mike Gansey will play in the gold medal game of the 2005 World University Games after his United States team dispatched Russia on Friday, 120-80, in the semifinal medal round held in Izmir, Turkey.
Team USA (7-0) will play Ukraine for the gold meal on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 3 p.m. at the Halkapinar Sports Hall in Izmir. Ukraine advanced with a 69-63 win over Serbia & Montenegro.
Gansey scored six points during Friday’s game against Russia on 2-of-5 shooting from the field. He was also the team’s third-leading rebounder with five. Duke’s Sheldon Williams and Villanova’s Randy Foye led all scorers with 20 markers apiece.
Sergey Bykov paced the Russians with 15 points off the bench.
In other action, Germany downed Canada, 63-59, in Friday’s consolation round. WVU’s Joe Herber started for the Germans and scored five points on 2-of-8 shooting from the field. He also snared four rebounds and had a team-high three steals. Germany’s Johannes Strasser and Canada’s Jimmy Balderson led all scorers with 19 points each.
