Men's Basketball: Gansey Helps USA Into Semis

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Mountaineer basketball players Mike Gansey and Joe Herber were in action on Thursday in the quarterfinal medal round of the men’s basketball World University Games held in Izmir, Turkey.
Gansey scored four points off the bench in the United State’s 88-68 win over Australia. Team USA improved its U-Games record to 6-0 and will play Russia on Friday at 12:45 p.m. in the semifinals. Russia was an 83-79 winner over Turkey on Thursday.
Gansey, who is averaging 7.2 points during the games, scored on a lay-up to give the Americans their largest first-half lead at 31-9. He shot 2 of 6 from the field and added a steal. Villanova’s Randy Foye led Team USA with 18 points, while Australia’s Ben Hunt led all scorers with 28.
In another quarterfinal game on Thursday, Germany lost to Ukraine, 69-62. Herber scored seven points for the Germans on 3-of-8 shooting with a rebound and an assist.
