MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – USA Basketball moved to 3-0 with a tough 72-62 victory over Germany Sunday afternoon in Izmir, Turkey. The game featured two West Virginia University teammates as USA’s Mike Gansey locked up against Germany’s Joe Herber.
Herber started for Germany and finished the game scoring eight points, making three of eight field-goal attempts and grabbing six rebounds.
Gansey came off the bench to contribute five points and grab three rebounds for the Americans. USA finishes the preliminary round as the top seeded team in Group F and will face Group E No. 2-seeded China in a second-round game Tuesday.
On Saturday, Gansey contributed seven points and pulled down four rebounds in an 85-70 win over Slovakia.
Herber scored 14 points to help Germany to a 64-60 win over Iran on Saturday. Germany finishes the preliminary round with a 2-1 record and advances as the No. 2-seeded team in Group F.
Germany will face the Group E top-seed Czech Republic on Tuesday.
