Men's Basketball: Gansey Shines in Team USA Win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia’s Mike Gansey came off the bench to score 13 points to lead Team USA to a tournament-opening 94-47 victory over Iran in the World University games played earlier today in Izmir, Turkey.
Gansey made three of seven field goal attempts including five of six from the free throw line and grabbed six rebounds for the winning Americans. A total of six U.S. players reached double figures.
Joe Herber, playing for the German National Team, managed to score nine points and grab three rebounds off the bench in Germany’s 80-60 victory over Slovakia. Herber made four of nine field-goal attempts and handed out a pair of assists.
Germany plays Iran and USA battles Slovakia tomorrow. Both teams are competing in the Group F preliminary round.
Meanwhile, Patrick Beilein and Darris Nichols are playing with a Big East/Atlantic 10 College All-Star team currently touring Italy.
Beilein was six of 10 from the floor including four of six from three-point range to score 19 points in an 80-77 victory over the Central Africa All-Stars. Nichols added seven points and a pair of assists.
In its second game, the College All-Stars dropped a 101-66 decision to the Bulgarian National team. Beilein and Nichols each scored 11 points. The College All-Stars are scheduled to play a pair of games over the weekend.
