MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The NCAA revealed its host sites for the 2007 gymnastics championships and West Virginia University is among the six schools that will host regional competitions. West Virginia will host the 2007 NCAA Southeast Regional at the WVU Coliseum on April 14.
West Virginia has hosted NCAA regionals five times since 1983 and last welcomed a regional to the Coliseum in 2002 when the Mountaineers placed third in the Southeast Regional.
The last three NCAA regionals held at the WVU Coliseum in 1994, 1999 and 2002 have attracted an average attendance of 2,611, including the 1994 crowd of 3,492 which was the largest gymnastics crowd in Coliseum history.
“It’s wonderful,” said WVU head coach Linda Burdette, who has led the Mountaineers to 27 regionals in the last 28 years. “This will be great to compete on your home floor. It has been a long time since we hosted and regionals and it will be good for the team, the school and the community.”
The event will consist of six teams, three selected from the top 18 qualifying teams in the country and three of the top remaining qualifying teams from within the region. The top two teams from the event will advance to nationals.
West Virginia has twice advanced to the NCAA Championships, which included hosting the 1999 NCAA Region 6 Championships with a second-place finish.
In 2005, the Mountaineers placed fifth at the NCAA Southeast Regionals held at the University of Florida. The 2006 NCAA Southeast Regional will be hosted by defending national champion Georgia.
