MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia University national champion Megan Metcalfe won the 5,000-meter run at the Canadian Senior Outdoor Championships held at University Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Saturday, July 15.
“It is like the USATF championships for Canadians,” said WVU assistant track and cross country coach Sean Cleary, who witnessed Metcalfe’s performance. “She looked very good. It was her first race since NCAAs. It was hot and humid and she ran the same tactic she used at NCAAs: wait until the last lap and with 200 meters to go she outkicked the woman ahead of her.”
Metcalfe’s winning time of 16:00.45 was two seconds faster than Tara Quinn-Smith, the Canadian national champion in the 10,000-meter run. Placing third was Canadian national marathon champion Nicole Stevenson with a time of 16:06.93.
“Megan’s performance parlays into a potential spot on the Commonwealth Games team,” said Cleary.
Metcalfe’s winning effort assures her a spot on the Canadian National Team for the World University Games held in Izmir, Turkey, Aug. 11-22.
In addition to Metcalfe, former WVU star Tara Struyk finished fifth with a time of 16:53.22. Struyk is hopeful of an invitation to the World University Games as well.
“She put herself into the selection pool with her performance Saturday,” said Cleary.
