Pastilong’s team shot a 16-under par 54 to win the event by four strokes over second-place teams captained by men’s soccer coach Mike Seabolt and former Mountaineer football standout Quincy Wilson.
“It feels great that after 23 years to finally be called a sand-bagger but I had nothing to do with it: I had four great players and that’s how you win championships,” said Pastilong.
Joining Pastilong’s team was Geoff Christian, Mike Basile, Jerry Cook and Gary Ward. The five-some began the 22-team tournament on the number-handicapped par-five No. 4. The group birdied 4, 5, 6, 8 and eagled the par-five No. 9. The only pars were recorded on 7, 11, 17 and 18.
The shot of the tournament came from Basile on par-four No. 1 after the team used Christian’s drive the reached the greenside bunker. Basile was able to hole out his bunker shot for an eagle to give the team a four-stroke lead. The group finished with back-to-back birdies to win by a comfortable margin.
“We were 12 under and there was a team 10 under and Mike hit one in from the bunker to give us an eagle on one. That sewed it up for us,” said Pastilong. “What did I do? Nothing. Just enjoyed an afternoon with these gentlemen.”
The team shot a 10-under-par 26 on the front nine and a six-under par 28 on the back nine.
Sponsoring holes for the tournament were Morgantown Printing & Binding, McJunkin Corporation, WVU Foundation, Inc., Revelation Choopers and LandAmerica Financial.
Hole-in-one sponsors were Royal Jeep, Subaru and Suzuki and the closest-to-the-pin sponsors were Charleston Marriott, Snowshoe Resort. The Greenbrier, Broyles Jewelers and Fred Haddad, Two football season tickets were awarded to the longest putt on hole 11 and two basketball season tickets were presented to the longest drive on hole 2.
The WVU Classic culminates the Mountaineer Athletic Club spring fundraising efforts for WVU student-athletes. All proceeds benefit the WVU athletic scholarship fund.
