MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - As the 2004-05 college school year draws to a close, West Virginia University head men's soccer coach Mike Seabolt says he can see vast improvements in his team from one year ago.
"We're really pleased with the improvement of the team and we're excited about the fall," said Seabolt.
Seabolt has reason to be excited as the Mountaineers enjoyed a very successful spring scrimmage schedule in which they posted an undefeated 2-0-3 record. The schedule Seabolt and his staff put together ranked amongst the top in the country with games against perennial powerhouses Penn State, Maryland, Duquesne and George Mason.
In its last game of the spring slate on April 30, WVU earned a 0-0 draw against defending MAC tournament champion and 2004 NCAA tournament participant Akron. Rising senior Devon McTavish paced the Mountaineers on the day from the midfield.
"Devon had a great game against Akron," said Seabolt.
McTavish wasn't the only one to have a stellar spring. Several players made exceptional strides.
"Nick Noble had a great spring in goal and Andrew Halsell really stepped up and improved a lot," said Seabolt. "Jarrod Smith had a good spring as well and really became a team player."
Seabolt also noted the solid play of midfielders Dan Stratford, Andrew Wright, Geoff Cameron and Matt Anstey, as well as defenders Pat Carroll, Paul Cunningham, and Chris Wittig
"All of our achievements are team achievements and really everyone had a good spring," said Seabolt. "That's why the team had the success and improvements we did."

Seabolt also announced that the team will be losing an important part of its coaching staff heading into the fall. Assistant coach Scott Bowers is leaving the team to move to Florida for family reasons.
"He's a great friend and the team is going to miss him," said Seabolt. "But he will always be a part of our team and the Mountaineer family."
Bowers duties on Seabolt's staff included training the goalkeepers, travel organization and game day coordination.
The Mountaineers open up the fall season on Thursday, Sept. 1, when they face Campbell in the WVU Labor Day tournament at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Other teams competing in the tournament include Temple and Marshall.
