MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Wrestling senior Greg Jones has won the 2005 Red Brown Cup, presented annually to West Virginia University’s most outstanding all-around student-athlete, in terms of athletic, academic and civic achievement.
Jones joins former gymnast Kristen Quackenbush (1996-1997) as the only two-time winners of the award. Winners are selected by the WVU Athletic Council.
Jones, a four-year letterman from Slickville, Pa., recently completed his senior season with a 25-0 record, his second-straight undefeated season, on the way to a third national championship. A four-time EWL champion and three-time NWCA all-star classic winner, he was named EWL Wrestler of the Year three times, three-time EWL Wrestler of the Week in 2005 and two-time EWL points champion.
Sporting a career record of 126-4, Jones was named the NCAA Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2005 and was a two-time finalist for the Hodge Trophy, given annually to the nation’s top wrestler. The sport behavior major has numerous academic honors: Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll, EWL all-academic team and NWCA all-academic team. Jones has been active in Special Olympics and spoke at the opening ceremonies of the 2002 West Virginia Special Olympics in Morgantown.
Jones was recently inducted into Mountain Honorary and was recognized by the State Legislature. He will graduate later this month with a degree in sport behavior and plans to attend graduate school at WVU to pursue a master’s degree in psychology.
