MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University tennis player Catherine Koontz has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America all-district II first team, while gymnast Janáe Cox was named to the second team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Co-captain Koontz had a stellar 2005 season for the Mountaineers on the courts as she posted a solid 5-4 singles record as well as a 6-2 doubles record. The Lexington, N.C., native saw action at the three, four and five seeds in her redshirt sophomore season after having major knee surgery in 2004.
Koontz was instrumental in guiding WVU's program back to the BIG EAST tournament for the first time since 2001 and helping the team post its best spring record in school history (16-7). The biochemistry major was just as impressive off the court as well as she earned a perfect 4.00 grade point average.
Cox completed another outstanding gymnastics campaign in 2005, competing at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year. The Otisco, Ind., native placed 24th in the all-around at the National Collegiate Women's Championship this past season. Cox was the 2005 EAGL conference co-champion in the all-around and champion on the balance beam. She ranks second in school history with 19 career all-around scores of 39.0 or higher.
Cox performance at the national championships marked just the 10th time a Mountaineer has competed in the meet and just the seventh time a gymnast has competed in the all-around. The elementary education major also scored high in the classroom with a GPA of 3.88.
