MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia Women’s Commission honored West Virginia University rifle coach Marsha Beasley on Sunday, May 1, during its Celebrate Women 2005 Awards Dinner held at the Marriott in Charleston, W.Va.
Beasley, a Morgantown, W.Va., resident, received the Celebrate Women Award in the sports category. A total of 13 women in 13 categories were recognized for “participating in shaping the state or the nation and serving as role models as women achievers for tomorrow’s females.”
The women’s commission is a division of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources which promotes the status and empowerment of all the state’s women.
"I am truly honored to have been nominated by the Morgantown Chapter of the American Association of University Women and to have been selected by the Women's Commission as an honoree," Beasley said. "Recognition by groups outside the sports world is very meaningful and an real affirmation of what I've been able to do at WVU."
As head coach of the Mountaineer rifle team, a coed sport at WVU which had three females competitors in 2004-05, Beasley completed her 15th varsity season this year and is the school’s all-time leader in wins with a record of 149-16. Beasley served as the advisor for WVU club team in 2003-04 and provided continuity and encouragement when the school reinstated the team as a varsity sport backed by state legislative funding, fund raising efforts of the team members and members of the West Virginia Rifle Endowment Team, and public support.
The West Virginia rifle team, the only team sport at WVU to win a national title, has won an NCAA-record 13 national championships dating back to 1983, including eight championships in nine years (1990-98) during Beasley’s tenure. Beasley has also coached 28 shooters who have earned a total of 121 all-America selections and eight individual NCAA titles.
