MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University director of athletics Ed Pastilong announced today the slate for the upcoming 2005 women’s soccer season.
The Mountaineers, who made their fifth-straight trip to the NCAA tournament last fall, open up the 2005 campaign with a non-conference match against Dayton, also a perennial NCAA tournament qualifier, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Friday, Aug. 26 at 7:00 p.m.
West Virginia’s schedule is highlighted by an appearance in the Portland/Nike tournament the weekend of Sept. 9-11 in Portland, Ore. WVU will face Washington on Friday, Sept. 9 and then battle 2002 national champion Portland on Sunday, Sept. 11.
The 2005 season, the 10th year of women’s soccer at WVU, marks a return of divisional play for BIG EAST matches. West Virginia will play host to St. John’s, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Marquette and South Florida while traveling to Pitt, Villanova, Georgetown, Connecticut and Providence for conference competition.
In all, eight of the Mountaineers 2005 opponents, including six of seven non-conference foes, made NCAA tournament play last fall, with Portland and Washington advancing to the Elite Eight.
WVU will play host to seven matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, including SEC-power Tennessee over Labor Day weekend. Super Soccer Sunday will be held prior to the Sunday, Sept. 25 match against St. John's and as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
“This is our toughest schedule yet,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We believe that to be the best, you have to play the best and we’re certainly playing some of the best teams in the country this year.”
