MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey today announced the signing of junior college transfer Britney Davis-White for the 2005-06 season.
Davis-White, a 5-foot-6 guard from Houston, Texas, comes to WVU after spending the last two years at Midland College, a two-year school in Midland, Texas.
As one of three sophomores on the team in 2004-05, all of which transferred to NCAA Division I programs, Davis-White helped the Lady Chaps compile a 43-19 record over the last two years including a 23-9 mark in 2004-05 and a berth in the regional semifinals.
“Britney can do a lot of different things,” said Midland coach Ron Jones. “She can shoot the three, drive the basket, and she plays great defense. She is a strong and athletic player.”
Davis-White, who averaged 9.9 points per game this past season, was an all-conference selection in 2005 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.
A McDonald’s All-America Team nominee in 2002-03, Davis-White prepped at Lamar High School in Houston where she averaged 19 points per game as a senior and was a two-year first-team selection in District 17-5A.
Carey considers Davis-White a perimeter play who fits in well with West Virginia’s style of play.
“She will give us added depth on the perimeter,” Carey said. “She is very athletic and known for her defensive skills. We are happy to add her to our roster.”
“I love Coach Carey’s style of play,” Davis-White said. “It’s very up and down and a quick pace. I also love the feeling of closeness and the family-bond between the coaches and players. I am proud to be a Mountaineer because I will be playing for a nationally-ranked university. They play in the best conference in the nation, the academic standards are high and all the student-athletes graduate.”
