MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team kept its conference winning streak intact on Saturday when it coasted to a 6-1 victory over Georgetown on a seasonably warm morning at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
The Mountaineers (12-6, 4-2) won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests to clinch the extra point. With the victory, WVU is guaranteed at least a fifth place finish in the conference and its first trip to the BIG EAST tournament since 2001.
“Advancing to the conference tournament has been a goal of ours for the last three seasons,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “Our overall goal from day one has been to bring respect back to the program and this is a major step in that quest.”
In No. 1 singles, sophomore Kelly Walsh defeated Stephanie Cohen, 6-2, 6-1, while No. 3 seed Monica Lyskawa breezed by Adriann Gin, 6-2, 6-0. Raynie Theis bettered Kristin Dew, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 singles and freshman Colleen Speaker defeated Sana Malouf by a score of 6-1, 6-2 in No. 5 seed action. Freshman Stacey Percival improved her conference singles record to 5-1 with her 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Georgetown’s Eileen Boyle.
On the doubles side, the duo of Percival and Prinz gave the Mountaineers their first victory with a 8-3 win over Dew and Malouf. Sophomore Catherine Koontz and Walsh clinched the doubles point for West Virginia with their 8-3 victory over Cohen and Boyle.
“The girls have gotten better and better as each match has progressed,” Silverstein says. “At this point, we can’t wait to play our next opponent.”
Silverstein and his Mountaineers will only have to wait another 72 hours before returning to the hard court. WVU will take a one-game hiatus from conference action when they host former Atlantic 10 rival Duquesne on Tuesday, April 12, at 3 p.m.
