MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's basketball team finished the 2004-05 season with a No. 12 ranking in the final post-tournament USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll.
This ranking marks the second time that the Mountaineers have been ranked in the final post-tournament poll since it was started in 1994. In 1998, the "Sweet 16" team finished with a No. 18 ranking.
The USA Today/ESPN poll released Tuesday has the Mountaineers ranked behind North Carolina, Illinois, Louisville, Michigan State, Kentucky, Arizona, Duke, Oklahoma State, Washington, Wisconsin and Wake Forest. Other WVU opponents ranked were Villanova (13th), Texas Tech (16th), Connecticut (17th), Boston College (19th), Syracuse (21st) and North Carolina State (22nd).
WVU spent two weeks previously ranked in the USA Today/ESPN poll this season. The Mountaineers were ranked No. 23 on Jan. 3, and No. 24 on Jan. 10. West Virginia was ranked No. 21 in the AP poll on Jan. 3.
The AP does not compile a post-tournament poll. West Virginia received 51 votes in the final AP poll on March 14.
The Mountaineers finished with a 24-11 record and defeated a school-record eight ranked teams this season.
