PITTSBURGH – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team wrapped up its most productive weekend of the season with a 5-2 victory over Rutgers on Sunday at the Oxford Athletic Club in Pittsburgh.
Sunday’s victory over Rutgers was West Virginia’s first triumph over the Scarlet Knights under fourth-year head coach Dan Silverstein.
The New Jersey sweep of Seton Hall and Rutgers moved WVU into the top four of the BIG EAST standings and helped the Mountaineers (11-6, 3-2) vastly improve their chances for a berth in the BIG EAST tournament.
“This was the best weekend of tennis we have played under my direction,” Silverstein says.
In singles action, freshman No. 2 seed Natalia Prinz downed Anela Dujsic, 6-4, 6-2, while three seed Monica Lyskawa topped Alina Balasa, 6-1, 6-4, in three seed action.
Freshman No. 5 seed Colleen Speaker defeated Ketevan Shmakova, 6-4, 6-2, and freshman Stacey Percival executed yet another singles victory at the six seed position with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lauren Edelschein.
In doubles play, West Virginia won two of three matches to garner the extra point. The duo of Prinz and Percival outlasted Dujsic and Balasa, 8-3, in No. 2 doubles while Walsh and sophomore Catherine Koontz blasted Edelschein and Helen Magomedova, 8-1, in three seed action.
“This win was a huge lift for our chances of making the BIG EAST tournament,” Silverstein says. “If we can continue to play at this level the rest of the way, this could end up being a special season.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, April 9, when they host Georgetown for a pivotal BIG EAST matchup in Pittsburgh.
