The two teams bring identical 5-8 conference marks into the weekend while Pitt owns a 19-15 overall record with WVU claiming a 19-23 mark.
West Virginia’s offense guided WVU to a 3-1 mark over the past four games while plating 49 runs behind 58 base hits. WVU batted .439 as a team during that stretch that included seven home runs and 12 doubles.
The Mountaineers are led offensively by outfielder Lee Fritz (.349), third baseman Justin Jenkins (.347) and shortstop Doug Nelms (.347). Anchoring the WVU pitching staff is senior Marty Fagler who has worked 41 2/3 innings pitched with a 2.81 ERA.
Pitt has not played since April 20 when it dropped a 9-4 decision to Kent State. Prior to the loss, the Panthers earned a series win over BIG EAST foe Villanova. Pitt is led by preseason conference player of the year Jim Negrych who sports a .392 batting average with seven home runs and 40 RBI.
A year ago, Pitt won both games (2-0, 7-2) over the Mountaineers in Morgantown. West Virginia holds the all-time advantage, 88-73, in a series that began in 1895.
West Virginia resumes conference play by hosting Seton Hall for a three-game series at Hawley Field on May 7-8.
