Wrestling: Three To Compete At U.S. Nationals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three West Virginia University wrestlers travel to Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend to compete in the 2005 Las Vegas/ASICS United States National Wrestling Championships and FILA Junior National Wrestling Championships on April 29-30.
Junior Matt Lebe and sophomore Zac Fryling will compete for Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club at 74 kg/163 lbs. in the men’s freestyle portion of the U.S. National tournament. Olympian Joe Williams is the defending champion as this weight class and is favored to repeat in 2005.
The nation’s best wrestlers compete for national titles and All-American honors at this event. Champions from the U.S. Nationals earn the No. 1 seed at the World Team Trials in Ames, Iowa, June 18-19, which will determine the 2005 U.S. World Championships teams.
Redshirt freshmen Kurt Brenner (84 kg/185 lbs.) will also compete for the Sunkist Kids but in a different tournament. Brenner will wrestle in the freestyle portion of the Men’s FILA Junior National Championships.
The nation’s best 17-20 year old wrestlers, including top high school and college stars, will compete for national titles and a chance to compete at the 2005 Junior World Championships in Lithuania this summer.

The U.S. National Wrestling Championships will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 on June 6 at 5 p.m. It will be a one-hour broadcast, on a tape-delayed basis, with championship bouts and highlights from the U.S. National finals in men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle wrestling.
