MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Stan Posluszny and Kyle Matuszek collected three hits each to lead West Virginia to a 10-1, rain-shortened win over Maryland Eastern Shore Friday night at Hawley Field.
The game was called after six innings due to lightning and rain.
Wes Osbourn scattered one run on six hits through six innings to collect the victory. Osbourn improves to 5-2 on the season.
West Virginia (17-22) got all the runs it needed in a six-run first, plating all six runs after two outs. Justin Jenkins doubled to right with one out and advanced to third on Lee Fritz’ deep fly out to left. Posluszny followed with a single to center to plate Jenkins. Posluszny scored on a Matuszek double down the left field line and Matuszek eventually scored on Casey Bowling’s single up the middle. Sandwiched between Matuszek and Bowling was a bunt single by Doug Nelms.
Travis DAmico reached on an infield single to bring in the fifth run of the inning and Tyler Kuhn cleaned things up with a single to center to score Bowling.
Posluszny smacked his seventh home run of the year in the fourth and finished the game with two runs batted in. Every player in the Mountaineer lineup recorded at least one hit include a pair of safeties by Jenkins, Fritz and Chad McKown. West Virginia collected 16 hits total.
First baseman Brandon McCabe and leftfielder Ronald Quick collected a pair of hits each for the Hawks, now 6-37 on the season. Ken Richardson took the loss for Maryland Eastern Shore, dropping his record to 1-9.
The two teams will try to overcome a threatening forecast to play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at noon. WVU student radio station U-92 will carry the first game of the twinbill and it can be heard online by logging onto u92.wvu.edu.
