College Park, Md. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team tied Maryland 1-1 in its fourth scrimmage of 2005 on Wednesday, April 20, in College Park, Md.
"Going on the road and getting any kind of result against a team like Maryland is a great accomplishment and confidence builder," said head coach Mike Seabolt. "The important thing is that the coaching staff and players weren't satisfied with the tie and we all felt we could have won if we played our best."
After falling behind 1-0 in the match, sophomore forward Jarrod Smith found the back of the net to secure the tie. 2004 leading goal scorer Dan Stratford assisted Smith on the play.
The Terps finished last season ranked third in the country in the NSCAA/Adidas poll and made its third-consecutive appearance in the Final Four of the NCAA College Cup.
During the 2004 season the Mountaineers knocked off No. 5 St. John's and No. 17 Notre Dame.
The tie puts WVU at 2-0-2 in scrimmages this spring.
WVU returns to action on Saturday, April 30, when it travels to Akron, Ohio, to face the Akron Zips. Game time is to be determined.
