MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team swept bitter rival Pitt, 7-0, on a historic day for the WVU tennis program on Thursday at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
West Virginia improved its record to 5-2 in conference play and 14-6 overall. The 14 wins are the most that WVU has posted in a single spring season since the program’s inception in 1973.
In singles action, top seed Kelly Walsh topped Jill Williams, 6-2, 6-2, while two seed Natalia Prinz outlasted Annie Davies, 7-5, 6-1. Monica Lyskawa, the team’s No. 3 seed, defeated Pitt’s Leah Friedman, 6-0, 6-1, while four seed Kathryn Gerber topped Emily Hughes, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Colleen Speaker defeated Carlie Smith, 6-2, 6-1, in five seed action while No. 6 seed Stacey Percival ousted Konita Jude, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles play, junior Raynie Theis and Lyskawa outlasted Williams and Hughes, 8-6, in one seed action while Walsh and sophomore Catherine Koontz topped Jude and Smith, 8-1, in three seed action.
“Our girls are gaining more and more confidence as the season progresses,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “To set the school record for victories in a spring season is great, but setting it with seven freshmen and no seniors is phenomenal. While the future is bright, we still feel that we have plenty to accomplish this season.”
The Mountaineers, winners of five straight, look to complete an undefeated home slate on Saturday, April 16, when they host BIG EAST foe Villanova at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
