MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University rowing team took ninth place overall at the GW Invitational in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, April 9, as three WVU boats saw action.
The Mountaineers' varsity eight boat started off the day by posting a time of 6:53.31 in the preliminaries, which earned them the fourth best time of the two heats as well as a spot in the finals.
In the finals, WVU took fourth place overall with a time of 7:07.50. The Mountaineers finished behind George Washington (6:23.80), Georgetown (6:27.70) and Villanova (6:27.80).
In women's second varsity eight competition, WVU completed the course in 7:26.25 in the preliminaries to earn a spot in the petite finals. In that race, the Mountaineers took first with a much better time of 7:05.70 and defeated their closest opponent Villanova by over 23 seconds. The first place finish put the boat fifth overall. The time even gave them a faster time than Georgetown's ‘B' boat, which finished in 7:18.00 in the grand finals.
Also racing on the day was WVU's freshman eight boat. The boat finished its preliminary run in a time of 7:43.40 and did not qualify for the finals.
The Mountaineers compete in their fourth-straight week of racing on Saturday, April 16, when they head to Camden, N.J., to race in the Knecht Cup.
