BOSTON – The West Virginia University women’s track team tallied a total of 29 points to achieve a ninth place finish at the ECAC indoor championships on Saturday, March 5, in Boston.
WVU posted a weekend total of five top five finishes to go along with a new school record in the 60 meter hurdles. West Virginia’s highest finish came from sophomore Jessica Czaikowski who recorded a second place school-best mark in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles.
On Saturday, sophomore Abbie Stechschulte placed fourth in the pentathlon with a score of 3,598 points. The Columbus Grove, Ohio, native’s performance was highlighted by a first place finish in the shot put where she recorded a toss of 11.75 meters.
Junior Nancy Regalbuto finished 10th in the finals of the high jump after recording a leap of 1.65 meters. Senior Devon Plesuk posted an 18th place finish in the 5,000 meter finals with a time of 17:17.02.
In Sunday’s action, Czaikowski placed second in the 60 meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional and new school record time of 8.23. The Tottenham, Ontario, native enters next weekend’s NCAA championships as the 13th ranked athlete in the country in the event.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with Jessica’s effort this weekend,” coach Jeff Huntoon says. “She did a great job of recovering from her sickness a few weeks ago to run well this weekend.”
Czaikowski also fared well in the finals of the 60 meter dash where she placed fourth with a time of 7.60.
Senior Jennifer Davis placed third in the finals of the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:48.58. Fellow senior Jennifer Kemp recorded an NCAA provisional time of 2:08.23 en route to a fourth place finish in the 800 meters.
“I was a little disappointed in the overall team results,” Huntoon says. “After having such a great finish last year, we felt like we could have scored a little better this weekend.”
The completion of the ECAC championships marks the end of the indoor season for the majority of the West Virginia track team. Four Mountaineers, however, will have their indoor campaigns extended for one more week when they compete in the nation’s final indoor meet of the 2004-05 season.
The athletes traveling to the NCAA championships are Czaikowski (60 meter hurdles) and the tandem of Jennifer Davis, Susan Davis, Pam Richardson and Kemp (distance medley relay). This year’s NCAA indoor championships are scheduled to take place on March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark.
