CLARION, Pa. – Three West Virginia University wrestlers placed in the consolation final round at the 2005 Eastern Wrestling League Championships on Sunday at Tippin Gymnasium.
Sophomore Zac Fryling punched his card to the NCAA tournament with a pair of wins to automatically qualify with a third-place finish. WVU’s 165-pounder battled Pitt’s Justin Nestor to a 6-3 decision at 165 pounds. Fryling took an early 4-1 lead two takedowns in the opening period. The two grapplers traded escapes to begin the second and third periods and Fryling added riding time for the 6-3 victory.
Fryling opened the afternoon with an 8-4 decision over Lock Haven’s B.J. Mikeska. Fryling’s berth to the NCAAs is the second of his career.
West Virginia’s Vince Gioiella went 1-1 on the afternoon to earn fourth-place honors at 141 pounds. Gioiella dropped a tough 12-4 major decision to Lock Haven’s Matt Fittery in the consolation finals. Gioiella struck first with a takedown 20 seconds into the match. A strong final period by Fittery put the contest out of reach to earn him third-place and a bid to the NCAA tournament.
Gioiella started the day for the Mountaineers with an impressive 5-1 decision over third-seeded Brad Forbes of Bloomsburg. Gioiella, a true freshman, scored the bouts’ first takedown with 22 seconds remaining in the opening period at 141 pounds. A Gioiella takedown in the second period extended his lead to 4-1 before adding one point for riding time.
Senior Ryan Wilman closed out his Mountaineer career with a solid 4-1 decision over Pitt’s Zach Doll. WVU’s 174-pounder wrestled to a scoreless opening three minutes with Doll. Wilman collected three back points while riding Doll for the entire middle session. The two traded points in the closing period for a 4-1 final score and fifth-place honors.
Four Mountaineers advanced to the championship finals this afternoon. Greg Jones (184) looks to become just the fourth EWL wrestler in league history to win four titles.
Junior Matt Lebe (157) will wrestle in his third consecutive finals match while Shawn Cordell (125) and Seth Lisa (133) make their first EWL finals appearance.
Tournament action resumes this afternoon with the championship finals matches at 2 p.m.
