Five Mountaineers scored bonus point wins in guiding WVU to 44.50 points, good for second-place after Session I. Edinboro is the team leader with 52.00 points while Pitt sits in third-place with 44.00 points and Bloomsburg is fourth with 40.00 points.
Shawn Cordell started things off for the Mountaineers at 125 pounds with a 11-0 major decision over Pitt’s Zack Bowman. Cordell, a true freshman, scored the bouts first takedown to take an early 2-0 lead one minute into the opening period. He tallied six points in the final two minutes and added riding time for the bonus point win.
Junior Seth Lisa followed with an impressive win at 133 pounds against Lock Haven’s Jim Collins. Lisa, wresting for the first time in a month, led 8-0 on a takedown and two near falls in the opening stanza. Second-seeded Lisa scored a takedown as time expired and used his riding time advantage for the 17-2 technical fall.
At 157 pounds, Matt Lebe added a pair of takedowns for a 4-1 lead over Bloomsburg’s Chris Tate. Lebe, the No. 1 seed, escaped to begin the third period and a takedown increased his lead to 9-2. Riding time pushed Lebe’s score to 10-2 giving the junior win number 30 on the season.
West Virginia dropped a pair of matches at 141 and 149 pounds. Freshman Vince Gioiella dropped an 11-1 major decision to Edinboro’s Rick McLaughlin. Sophomore Teddy Adams fell 12-5 to Cleveland State’s Ryan Hurley.
Two-time NCAA champion Greg Jones tied the WVU all-time wins record with a 20-6 major decision over Lock Haven’s Mike Metzger at 184 pounds. Jones, a Hodge Trophy candidate, held a 9-3 lead after one period on three takedowns and a near fall. The Mountaineer senior was awarded a point for stalling and added a pair of takedowns in the final period to remain unbeaten and push his winning streak to 44 straight matches.
Third-seeded Jared Villers scored all his points in a dominant opening period at 197 pounds. Freshman Villers connected on a double-leg takedown for the bouts’ first points. He then tallied three two-point near falls for an 8-0 lead on Clarion’s Charlie Cilinksi. Villers amassed over three minutes in riding time for the 9-0 major decision.
At 174 pounds, Ryan Wilman wrestled to a scoreless first period with Cleveland State’s Matt Klinger. Wilman escaped from the defensive position to start the middle period before notching a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Klinger opened the final two minutes with an escape before Wilman scored the winning takedown to go up 5-2 and hold on for a 5-4 decision.
Mountaineer heavyweight Matt Holsopple dropped a tough 16-8 major decision to Edinboro’s Joe Hennis. Hennis, the No. 2 seed, took a 6-3 lead after one period on three takedowns. Holsopple initiated on the scoring despite moving into the consolation bracket.
