Rowing: WVU Finishes Strong at Murphy Cup

PHILADELPHIA – The West Virginia University rowing team took fourth place in the varsity 4 and fifth in varsity 8 competition on Saturday, March 26, at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia, on the Schuylkill River.
“The weekend's racing was productive,” said head coach Nancy LaRocque. “Each boat did well in their respective race.”
The Mountaineers began the day by winning their heat in the varsity four. WVU’s boat comprised of Michelle Heier (cox), Christy Davison, Megan Will, Erin McLaughlin and Cara Cruikshank completed the course in 7:36.10, beating out second place Bucknell by over two seconds.
In the finals the women rowed the course in a time of 7:40.08, falling behind Villanova (7:24.61), Navy (7:35.00) and Carnegie Mellon (7:35.65).
In varsity 8 competition WVU’s Laura Goren (Cox), Katie Baylor, Meg Ayers, Donna Stullken, Robin Reed, Kirsten Leslie, Amelia Payne, Caitlin Everett and Courtney Sullivan started in lane three and finished second in its heat in a time of 6:49.11. Villanova took first in the heat, finishing in 6:42.20.
Coming out of lane five in the finals, the Mountaineers took fifth with a time of 6:46.51. WVU finished behind Princeton (6:30.26), Navy (6:31.74), Villanova (6:40.67) and Temple (6:46.18).
The Mountaineers return to action next weekend when they travel to San Diego, Calif., to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic from April 2-3.
