MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The reigning East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) champion West Virginia University gymnastics team will defend its title Friday, March 25, at the 2005 EAGL Championships. The eight-team meet at North Carolina State’s Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C., will begin at 6 p.m.
Three WVU gymnasts enter the meet as league statistical leaders. Sophomore Janáe Cox is the league’s top all-arounder with a 39.28 regional qualifying score (RQS), senior Kari Williams is the conference’s top vaulter with a 9.885 RQS, and senior Jessica Bartgis is the best on the uneven bars with a 9.82 RQS.
West Virginia, with a record of 12-6 in 12 meets this year, enters the meet as the third-best team in the EAGL with a 194.66 RQS, but only 0.18 separates the top three teams, which also include first-place N.C. State (194.84) and second-place North Carolina (194.675).
The Mountaineers have won the EAGL championship a league-record five times since winning the title in the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Two current WVU gymnasts, Bartgis and Cox, are league champions after the two shared the vault title in last year’s meet held in Pittsburgh, Pa. West Virginia set a EAGL championship meet record in 2004 with a 197.05 team score.
