Gymnastics: Cox Collects Honor, High Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Janáe Cox, a sophomore on the West Virginia University gymnastics team, cracked the NCAA Top 25 in two categories when the new rankings were released Monday, March 21, just three days after the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) named her gymnast of the week for a third time this season.
Cox, a native of Otisco, Ind., is coming on strong at the end of the season. She is the NCAA’s 21st-ranked gymnast in the all-around with a 39.28 regional qualifying score (RQS) and the 22nd-ranked gymnast on the floor exercise with a 9.89 RQS.
On Thursday, March 17, the EAGL announced Cox as gymnast of the week for her performance at the Eagle Classic hosted by Eastern Michigan on Saturday, March 12. Cox won the all-around at the four-team event won by WVU with a 39.25 in the all-around. During the meet at Eastern Michigan, Cox tied a career high with a 9.9 score on the balance beam and also scored her fourth 9.9 on the floor this year.
She since won the all-around at N.C. State on Saturday, March 19, with a score of 39.225. Cox has won the all-around five times this year, four of which coming in the last four meets.
Cox, the 2004 EAGL Rookie of the Year, has five career EAGL gymnast of the week honors to her credit including three this year.
West Virginia (12-6), the defending EAGL champions, will compete in the EAGL Championships Friday, March 25, at N.C. State’s Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C., beginning at 6 p.m.
