YPSILANTI, Mich. – Solid routines in the third-rotation floor exercise fueled the West Virginia gymnastics team to a first-place finish and a team score of 194.85 at the Eagle Classic Saturday night at the Bowen Field House on the campus of Eastern Michigan.
The four-team meet included three wins for the Mountaineers (12-5) over host EMU (8-9), No. 20 Southern Utah (6-4), and No. 18 Kent State (8-8).
Eastern Michigan compiled a 194.175 team score for second place, followed by Southern Utah’s 193.9 for third and Kent State’s 192.975 for fourth.
WVU improves its regional qualifying score (RQS) from 194.35 to 194.38 for the season. The RQS is used for national rankings as the Mountaineers are looking to crack the Top 25 for the first time in four weeks after starting the week ranked 31st with a 193.97 RQS.
Mountaineer sophomore Janáe Cox won the all-around with a sum of 39.25, including wins on floor and beam, while senior teammate Jessica Bartgis captured the win on uneven bars. WVU gymnasts won all four events as senior Kari Williams won vault. Bartgis also competed in the all-around with a fourth-place 38.5.
WVU won two of the four team events capturing vault (48.9) and floor (49.15).
In the first rotation, the Mountaineers performed above average routines on the uneven bars and compiled a 48.025 led by Bartgis’ first-place score of 9.775 marking her fifth straight score of 9.775 or higher. The win continues an impressive streak of nine wins in her last 10 meets on bars. Senior Carri Nagle closely followed sticking a 9.7 and Cox garnered a 9.625.
West Virginia tallied a 48.775 on the balance beam in the second rotation—the team’s second-highest of the season—anchored by a first-place tying score of 9.9 from Cox. Cox hit on her first 9.9 beam score of the season and fifth in all events—her other four 9.9s were on floor this year including on during Saturday’s meet. Cox now has 21 scores of at least 9.9 in her career, one of only five all-time WVU gymnasts to accomplish such a feat.
Two additional Mountaineers equaled season bests on beam, as sophomore Cheryl Goldenfield nailed her beam routine with 9.825 tying a mark set Feb. 4, while Nagle’s 9.8 matched a score from Feb. 20.
West Virginia put up high marks again on the floor exercise as it amassed a score of 49.15, its third score of 49.0 or higher of the season all of which coming in the last three meets. Cox’ third 9.9 on floor of the season won the meet leading the Mountaineers followed closely by sophomore Tynisha Dennis and her 9.875, Bartgis with a 9.825 and freshman Jaime Gold with a 9.8.
The win clinching fourth rotation for WVU came on vault with its 48.85. The West Virginia vault team, ranked 15th in the country entering the week, came through with high marks by Williams, whose 9.85 place first, while Cox stuck a 9.825 for the second time in as many meets and a second-place tie for the meet. Williams has won eight meets of her last 10 meets on vault.
