MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team recently added Cornell to the schedule, replacing a four-game series with Towson this weekend at Hawley Field. The Mountaineers and Big Red will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a three-game series on March 12-13.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 12, and a single game on Sunday, March 13. First pitch is set for noon on both days at Ernie Shore Field, home of the Winston-Salem Warthogs, a Single A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
Cornell, led by 15th-year coach Tom Ford, has yet to play a game this season due to poor weather conditions in the New York area. Ford returns five starting position players and three starting pitchers from last year's squad that finish 13-29.
The Mountaineers (3-7) are coming off an 8-5 victory at East Tennessee State last weekend. Senior hurler Shawn Miller allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of work to improve to 1-2 on the year. Outfielder Chad McKown went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs, including his second home run of the season.
West Virginia is slated to begin its home season on Tuesday, March 15, with a doubleheader against Niagara at 1 p.m.
