WACO, TEXAS - West Virginia University's Rich Rodriguez and San Jose State University's Dick Tomey have been added to the American Football Coaches Association's Board of Trustees.
They join a group of distinguished head coaches who guide the organization. The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman and others. The AFCA has more than 10,000 members from all levels of the profession.
Rodriguez will begin his fifth season as the head football coach at his alma mater in 2005. In four seasons at West Virginia he has a record of 28-21 and has led the Mountaineers to three consecutive bowl appearances. Rodriguez's previous head coaching stops include one season at Salem College and seven seasons at Glenville State University. He has a 12-year career record of 73-57-2.
"It's a privilege to represent my peers on the the AFCA Board of Trustees," Rodriguez said. "There are so many important issues facing us as football coaches and leaders of young men, and it's an honor to work among these fine coaches as they move our sport and organization forward."
Tomey was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1996 to 2000 while at the University of Arizona. He will move into the third vice-president role in 2006. Tomey was named the head coach at San Jose State in December of 2004, his third head coaching stop in a 41-year coaching career. He is the all-time winningest coach at Arizona and the University of Hawaii, joining George Welsh and Bear Bryant as the only Division I-A coaches who are career victory leaders at two different schools. He is 158-110-7 in 24 years as a head coach. Tomey was the assistant head coach and defensive ends coach at the University of Texas in 2004.
"I've enjoyed my work with the AFCA and the Board of Trustees in the past and I'm excited about being asked to serve on the Board again," Tomey said. "I have great respect for the Association and I'm looking forward to working with Grant Teaff and the other AFCA officers and trustees."
In addition to Rodriguez and Tomey, the 2005 AFCA Board of Trustees include president Scot Dapp of Moravian College; first vice-president Mel Tjeerdsma of Northwest Missouri State University; second vice-president Ken Sparks of Carson-Newman College and third vice-president Tyrone Willingham of the University of Washington.
