Jones raced out to a 7-2 lead against Pitt’s Mike Heist at 184 pounds on two takedowns and a three-point near fall. Leading 13-2 in the second period, Jones turned Heist to his back for his third fall of the season at 4:34. Jones’ six team points were crucial in helping seal the dual meet win over their neighboring rival as WVU improved to 3-0 in EWL action.
The Slickville, Pa., native owns a perfect 24-0 record in EWL dual meet contests. Jones, a two-time NCAA champion, boasts a career record of 114-4, six shy of becoming West Virginia’s all-time wins leader.
Jones, the 2004 EWL points champion, leads the league in points with 18 through three outings. The league wrestler of the week honor is the sixth of his career for the Mountaineer senior.
The Hodge Trophy candidate also sports a 39-match win streak. He previously set the school record for consecutive wins with 46 from 2001-03.
Jones and the Mountaineers resume dual meet action by hosting Mid-American Conference member Ohio on Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m.
