MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team defeated Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and absorbed a loss to host Kentucky Saturday in a triangular match held in Lexington, Ky.
The Mountaineers (3-6, 0-4) posted an aggregate score of 4561 and beat the Engineers’ (6-7) mark of 4506, while the Wildcats (8-4, 4-1) handed WVU its fourth loss in Great America Rifle Conference action of the season with their 4611 score.
West Virginia shot 2267 smallbore and 2294 air rifle, while Kentucky fired 2306 and 2305, and Rose-Hulman 2243 and 2263.
Freshman Lafe Kunkel led West Virginia with a 573 smallbore total firing 194 prone, 187 standing and 192 kneeling. Junior Brian Launer shot the highest marks for the Mountaineers in the air rifle competition with a 576.
Senior Heather Sawyer, who shot season bests in both disciplines, followed in air with a 575 and freshman Amy Smith with a 574. Kunkel rounded out WVU’s air sums handing in a 569.
The remainder of WVU’s smallbore scores consisted of Launer with a 569, Sawyer with a season-high 568 and senior Eric Hensil marking a 557.
Kentucky’s Chris Boggs and Kristi Crenwelge led all smallbore scores with a pair of 577s, while Wildcat Vicki Goss handed in the best air total of 582.
Non-counting team members of the WVU rifle team showed improvement as Robin Glebes shot a personal-best 561 in smallbore, Smith tied a personal best with a 573 smallbore and Natasha Dinsmore’s 568 air score was also a season high.
“Improvement is always important,” said WVU head coach Marsha Beasley. “I'm very glad to see personal bests and season bests. I am pleased with Heather Sawyer and Amy Smith who seem to be returning well from injuries. We have missed their contributions to our smallbore scores. I am optimistic we can put together higher scores.”
West Virginia returns to action Saturday, Feb. 12, for its NCAA qualifying match at Xavier.
