RICHMOND, Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team closed out competition at the VCU Invitational with a 3-1 victory over East Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 5, in Richmond, Va.
The win improved West Virginia’s record to 3-2, including a perfect 2-0 against Conference USA opponents.
After falling in both of her matches Friday, freshman Natalia Prinz got back on track with a grueling 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-2 victory over ECU’s Gillie Bailey.
Fellow freshman Monica Lyskawa wasn’t as fortunate, falling by a 6-3, 6-1 margin to Raluca Baicu. Freshman Kathryn Gerber gave the Mountaineers their second singles victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Luiza Borges.
Sophomore Kelly Walsh was in the midst of a three set match with Mireia Gol when the match was called after the Mountaineers clinched the victory.
In doubles action, Raynie Theis and Stacey Percival won their second tournament match in three tries with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over East Carolina’s Kirstin Buchanan and Alex Smith.
“To come out of this tournament with a 2-1 record is outstanding,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “Playing three matches in just over 24 hours is tough, and they passed the test with flying colors.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Feb. 11, when they host Wright State in Pittsburgh.
