Gymnastics: No. 17 Southern Utah Visits WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will compete against its first nationally-ranked team of the season when No. 17 Southern Utah visits the WVU Coliseum on Friday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m., in non-conference action.
The Mountaineers (1-2) are coming off a 192.2-192.1 loss to fellow East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) member North Carolina last Saturday in WVU’s home opener. West Virginia, carrying a 191.85 season scoring average, owns the nation’s 24th-rated vault team with a 48.575 average.
Despite its first home loss since 2003, West Virginia gymnasts placed first in three of the four events versus North Carolina, including wins by senior Kari Williams on vault (9.825), senior Jessica Bartgis on the even bars (9.850), and Janáe Cox on the floor exercise (9.85).
The Thunderbirds (1-2) are ranked because of their 194.05 season team scoring average, despite an upset loss at Centenary last Friday, 194.175-193.975. Southern Utah’s lone win came at home over No. 12 Denver, 195.525-195.15, while its other loss came at the hands of No. 8 Brigham Young, 195.725-192.575.
Pittsburgh, Pa., native Carly Geronimo, ranked 10th in the country with a 9.887 average score on floor, is leading Southern Utah and its eighth-ranked floor team with a 48.975 season average. The Thunderbirds are also sporting the nation’s 23rd-rated vault team with a 48.6 average.
Friday’s meet will mark the second meeting all-time between the two teams after West Virginia defeated SUU at the 2000 Nebraska Masters Classic, 195.475-193.075.
