Baseball: Coastal Cruises Over WVU

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Coastal Carolina scored four runs in the third, fifth and sixth to cruise to a 13-2 win over West Virginia Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
West Virginia (2-3) was able to plate single runs in the second and eighth.
Rightfielder Chad McKown went to two for three with a run scored to lead West Virginia’s offense. Shortstop Tyler Kuhn scored the Mountaineers’ other run.
Kuhn, Brandon Drespling, Stan Posluszny, Trent Ridgley and Travis DAmico also had hits for West Virginia, which had seven total for the game.
Mike DeJesus led Coastal Carolina with three hits, three runs and three RBI.
Coastal (3-1) got seven strong innings from starter Ricky Shefka, who scattered five hits and allowed one earned run.
Jimmy Rhodes started for West Virginia and pitched two innings before giving way to Kenny Durst in the third inning. Durst gave up seven runs, five earned, on four hits to take the loss, his first of the season.
Brendan Bergerson, Marty Fagler and Todd Dunham also pitched for West Virginia.
The Mountaineers return to the diamond next Friday afternoon to face East Carolina in Charleston, S.C. WVU will also play The Citadel and N.C. State during the weekend.
