Baseball: ECU Defeats WVU

CONWAY, S.C. – The West Virginia University baseball team fell to East Carolina 8-2 in its second game of the Baseball at the Beach tournament in Conway, S.C., on Saturday, Feb. 19.
For the second game in a row the Mountaineers (2-2) allowed one big inning defensively early in the game that allowed their opponent to slip away.
After two scoreless innings by both teams, the Pirates (2-3) crossed the plate six times on three hits in the top of the third to earn their second-straight win.
Right fielder Brian Cavanaugh led the ECU offense with two RBI’s in the game, while five other Pirates knocked in a run in the game.
Senior outfielder Lee Fritz put WVU on the board in the bottom of the fourth when he sent a deep home run over the left field fence that scored himself and freshman Tyler Kuhn.
East Carolina starting pitcher P.J. Connelly (1-0) was highly effective in the game, allowing two earned runs and scattering seven hits in seven and one-third innings of work. Cavanaugh struck out five batters and walked one.
WVU’s Chris Amedro (1-1) takes the loss in his second start of the season. Amedro allowed five earned runs and four hits in two and on-third innings of work, while striking out one and walking two.
The Mountaineers complete their competition at the Baseball at the Beach tournament on Sunday, Feb. 20, when they face host Coastal Carolina at noon.
