Women's Basketball: WVU Battles Georgetown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia looks to keep its momentum going Saturday afternoon when it takes on Georgetown in a 1-pm Big East contest.
The Mountaineers bumped their record to 14-9, 5-7, with a six-point road win at Pitt Wednesday night. West Virginia scored the game’s final 11 points to overcome a five-point deficit with a minute to go to register its second conference road victory of the season.
Senior guard Yolanda Paige scored nine of her 13 points in the game’s remaining 40 seconds to offset the loss of leading scorer Meg Bulger, lost to fouls with 49 seconds left.
Bulger finished the game with 16 points and leads West Virginia with an average of 20.2 points per game. Sherell Sowho is averaging 12.6 points while Paige averages 11.3 points and 9.1 assists per game.
Joining those three in West Virginia’s starting lineup is 5-foot- 10 freshman Chakhia Cole (6.9 ppg. and 7.3 rpg.) and 6-foot-2 freshman center Olayinka Sanni (6.0 ppg. and 4.0 rpg.).
Sanni scored a career-high 21 points in West Virginia’s 71-65 loss to Georgetown in Washington, D.C., back on Feb. 5. Bulger contributed 18 for the Mountaineers, which couldn’t overcome Georgetown’s 12-2 run at the start of the second half.
Six-foot-four junior center Varda Tamoulianis did the most damage against West Virginia, scoring 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
Five-foot-11 junior guard Bethany LeSueur added 14 points on four of seven shooting from three-point range.
Five-foot-10 freshman Kierah Marlow is Georgetown’s top scorer averaging 12.8 points per game. The Coatesville, Pa., resident is also the Hoyas’ top rebounder averaging 8.8 boards per game.
Georgetown (9-14, 4-8) is a game behind West Virginia in the Big East standings in ninth place. In addition to West Virginia, the Hoyas show conference wins over St. John’s, Providence and Syracuse. Georgetown has dropped two straight to Notre Dame and Connecticut and has also lost its last two times in Morgantown.
Overall, Georgetown owns a 10-4 advantage in series play.
Saturday’s game will tip off at 1 pm and will be televised by the Mountaineer Sports Network (Hoppy Kercheval and Jay Jacobs). The game will are live on Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh and Charter 22 in Charleston. WVFX in Clarksburg will televise the game on tape-delay basis at 6 pm.
