MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The West Virginia University baseball team suffered its first loss of the season to No. 21-rated Clemson 7-2 on Friday, Feb. 18, at the Baseball at the Beach tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Two errors by WVU (2-1) killed its chances for an upset as the mistakes allowed four unearned runs to cross the plate for the Tigers (1-0) in the second inning.
Clemson jumped on the board in the first when third baseman Travis Storrer hit a shot to right field that scored teammate Taylor Harbin from second base.
In the bottom of the second Clemson took advantage of the two West Virginia fielding errors. Third baseman Herman Demmink started off the inning with a single to center field and WVU pitcher Shawn Miller put a second runner on by walking left fielder Tyler Colvin.
The bases loaded when Stan Windmann grounded to shortstop Doug Nelms, whose throw trying to get out Colvin sailed wide of second base. Leadoff hitter Brad Chalk then drove a pitch to right center earning him a double and two RBIs.
The Tigers weren’t done yet in the frame. Second baseman Taylor Harbin grounded out to third to get the second out of the inning, however, it allowed Widmann to cross the plate. Storrer followed with a double to left to get his second RBI. WVU third baseman Justin Jenkins let a ground ball slip through his legs to score Storrer to increase the Clemson advantage to 6-0.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the top of the third when Jenkins singled up the middle that allowed freshman Tyler Kuhn to score from second base.
WVU’s Lee Fritz closed the score to 6-2 in the fifth as he doubled to right center to score Kuhn.
The Tigers closed out scoring for the game in the sixth inning when Taylor Harbin scored on a wild pitch.
Despite a solid outing, senior pitcher Shawn Miller received the loss to move his record to 0-1. The Troy, N.Y., native allowed two earned runs and seven hits, while striking out three in four innings of work.
Kuhn led the WVU offense on the day as he went 3-4 at the plate and scored both of the runs.
The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow, Feb. 19, at noon when they face East Carolina in their second game of the Baseball at the Beach tournament at East Carolina’s Charles Watson Stadium.
