MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team faces its third ranked opponent of the season when it travels to Louisville, Ky., on Friday, Feb. 18, for a non-conference tilt with No. 75 Louisville.
WVU (4-2) enters Friday’s match in the midst of its first winning streak of the season. The Mountaineers, winners of two straight, defeated East Carolina, 3-1, on Feb. 5 and Wright State, 6-0, on Feb. 11. Aside from its victory over ECU, West Virginia has also defeated Cincinnati, giving it a two-match winning streak against Conference USA opponents.
Louisville (8-3) enters Friday’s match on the heels of a 3-2 loss to No. 33 New Mexico on Feb. 13. The Cardinals will face Arkansas-Little Rock at 1 p.m. on Friday before facing off against West Virginia at 7:30 p.m.
All three of Louisville’s losses have come to nationally ranked opponents. Aside from their setback to New Mexico, the Cardinals have fallen to No. 7 Kentucky, 6-1, and No. 64 Marshall, 5-2.
Through the early portion of the season, Louisville has dominated visiting opponents at home. The Cardinals have played eight of their first 11 matches at home and currently own a record of 7-1 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. In its seven home wins, Louisville has won 44 out of 49 individual sets.
“We realize that this is going to be a great challenge for our team,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “We know we have the potential to compete with teams of this caliber. We are looking forward to a great team effort on Friday night.”
