Track: WVU Posts Two NCAA Qualifying Marks

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The West Virginia University women’s track team posted a total of 10 ECAC, four BIG EAST and two NCAA provisional marks on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup in State College, Pa.
The Mountaineers finished the weekend with one event championship to go along with eleven top ten finishes.
West Virginia’s two NCAA provisional times came from senior Jennifer Kemp and the DMR tandem of Kemp, seniors Jennifer Davis and Pam Richardson and junior Susan Davis.
Kemp’s NCAA performance came in the 800 meters where she posted a time of 2:08.82 en route to a second place overall finish. The Edmonton, Alberta, native's time was the second best time in school history and propelled her to a top ten national ranking in the event.
The DMR squad, now ranked ninth in the country, crossed the line in a time of 11:24.52 to achieve West Virginia’s only first place finish of the weekend.
In other action, junior Junique Morris recorded an ECAC qualifying mark in the 60 meter dash finals where she crossed the line in a sixth place finishing time of 7.64. In the 200 meters, Morris (9th) and sophomore Shani Boone (10th) registered ECAC qualifying times of 24.72 and 24.73 respectively.
Richardson was West Virginia’s top finisher in the 400 meters where she crossed the line in 14th with an ECAC qualifying time of 56.17. Sophomore Halimah Bashir recorded an ECAC qualifying time of 56.85 en route to an 18th place finish.
In the mile, freshman Alison Spiker continued her streak of solid performances after recording a BIG EAST qualifying time of 5:12.37. The Ripley, W.Va., native’s time was good enough for a 21st place finish. Fellow freshman Maria Stover finished right on the heels of Spiker with a 23rd place finishing time of 5:13.77.
Jennifer Davis led a Mountaineer charge in the 3,000 meters that included two top ten finishes, three ECAC times and a near-NCAA qualifying mark. The Romney, W.Va., native was the top West Virginia finisher, crossing the line in fourth to achieve an ECAC qualifying time of 9:35.99. Davis’s time was the fourth best time in school history and was just .99 hundredths of a second slower than the NCAA provisional standard of 9:35.99. Senior Devon Plesuk finished eighth with an ECAC time of 9:52.09 while Susan Davis crossed the line in 11th to achieve an ECAC mark of 9:57.03.
In the 5,000 meters, junior Colleen Hughes placed ninth with a time of 18:02.80 while fellow freshman Nicole Lemal posted a 10th place finishing time of 18:03.43. Sophomore Abbie Stechschulte failed to qualify for the finals of the 60 meter hurdles, but posted an ECAC qualifying time of 8.81 en route to a 12th place overall finish in the preliminaries.
West Virginia recorded one ECAC and three BIG EAST qualifying performances in the weekend’s field events. Junior Nancy Regalbuto posted another ECAC mark in the high jump after registering a second place leap of 1.73 meters. Senior Mary Greene (1.58m) and sophomore Alexis Noel (1.58m) finished in a tie for 19th.
Stechschulte and Noel recorded BIG EAST qualifying marks in the long jump where they finished in a tie for 11th place with a respective mark of 5.45 meters. In the weight throw, junior Michele McGinnis placed 22nd with a BIG EAST qualifying toss of 14.86 meters.
The Mountaineers have officially completed the regular season portion of the 2004-05 indoor campaign. West Virginia returns to action on Feb. 19-20, when they travel to Syracuse, N.Y., to compete in the BIG EAST indoor championships.
