Women's Tennis: WVU Tops Wright State

PITTSBURGH – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team posted its second consecutive victory of the season with a 6-0 victory over Wright State on Friday, Feb. 11, in Pittsburgh.
The Mountaineers (4-2) won 12 of the match’s 14 sets to clinch their fourth victory of the season.
In singles action, freshman No. 1 seed Natalia Prinz captured an easy victory over Jessica Lee, 6-2, 6-0, while freshman Monica Lyskawa defeated Tiffani Foster, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 2 seed singles. In No. 3 seed action, freshman Kathryn Gerber topped Audra Beckett, 7-6, 6-3.
Freshman No. 4 seed Stacey Percival overcame a sluggish start to defeat Laura Culbertson by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 while sophomore Catherine Koontz defeated Megan Laux, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 5 position. Sophomore Ashley Constantine completed the sweep with a dramatic 6-1, 7-6, 7-6 victory over Christa Ames in No. 6 singles.
“I’m happy with the way our team played today,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “I was especially pleased with the way that Catherine and Ashley stepped into the lineup and performed. Knowing that they can come into the lineup and contribute is huge for our depth.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Feb. 18, when they hit the road to face No. 75 Louisville. The Cardinals will be the third ranked opponent the Mountaineers have faced in their first seven matches.
