MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Former West Virginia University women’s soccer standout Katie Barnes is currently in the U.S. National Team pool.
Barnes, who is currently an assistant coach at Alabama, is one of several candidates U.S. National Team coach April Heinrichs has chosen to evaluate in preparation for the 2007 Women’s World Cup.
While at West Virginia, Barnes earned All-America accolades in 2000 and 2001 to become the first women’s soccer All-American at WVU. Twice she was named BIG EAST offensive player of the year (2000, 2001). During her tenure, she set eight career WVU records.
In 2002, the Mason, Ohio, native, became the first Mountaineer women’s soccer player to be drafted by the WUSA when the Carolina Courage selected her with the ninth overall pick of the draft. In 2003, she played for the San Jose CyberRays and was selected to that year’s all-star game.
Barnes was a member of the U.S. U-21 National Team that claimed its third consecutive Nordic Cup in 2001.
“We’re very excited to know that Katie is in the National Team pool,” said West Virginia head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “This is the highest honor a women’s soccer player can receive and we’re proud to have her representing West Virginia on the national scene. We wish her the best of luck and hope to see her in the next World Cup or Olympics.”
