Gansey made 10 of 12 from the floor including 2 of 3 from 3-point range in just 27 minutes of action. Pittsnogle hit 7 of 13 and also grabbed 4 rebounds and handed out 3 assists in 29 minutes.
“They’re playing pretty well together,” said West Virginia coach John Beilein of his two seniors. “If you just give a little bit too much attention to them they will find the shooters on that other side spotting up.”
The Mountaineers (5-3) used a 12-0 run to take control of the game midway through the first half. Leading 20-16, West Virginia got four straight 3s from Pittsnogle, Joe Herber, Gansey and Patrick Beilein to make it 32-16 with 4:15 left in the first half. West Virginia finished with a 10-3 run to take a comfortable 42-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
West Virginia’s biggest lead was 36, 80-44 with 5:22 remaining before Beilein emptied his bench.
Darris Nichols scored 9 points in 16 minutes of action coming off the bench. The sophomore also dished out 3 assists while shooting 50 percent from the floor.
“He’s a point guard who can shoot but he doesn’t have that mentality,” said Beilein of Nichols. “He beats himself up a little bit. He plays every day in the extra session because I want him to feel good about himself and just go out there and play.”
The Mountaineers made 32 of 57 field goal attempts for 56.1 percent, including 13 of 29 from 3 for 44.8 percent.
“Frank (Young) got much more comfortable today: he made some good shots and he played better defense,” said Beilein of the forward’s 7-point, 3-rebound night.”
UMBC (2-4) committed 25 turnovers, offsetting a 38-24 rebounding advantage.
John Zito led the Retrievers with 17 points. Jerrell Dinkins and Chris Pugh scored 11 each.
West Virginia wraps up its three-game home stand on Saturday against rival Duquesne at the Coliseum. Tip off is set for noon and the game will be televised by ESPN Plus. The Dukes lost 71-60 to Pitt tonight.
