MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Seniors Marisa Kanela and Kambria Riggins along with freshman Amanda Cicchini have earned regional accolades for their play during the 2005 season the NSCAA announced today.
Kanela and Riggins earned a spot on the all-Mid-Atlantic second team while Cicchini was honored with a spot on the region’s third team.
Kanela, a native of Wantagh, N.Y., was the Mountaineers’ leading scorer in 2005, netting nine goals and a career-best nine assists for 27 points on the season. She earned her second all-BIG EAST second team honor in 2005. It is also the second-straight year that Kanela has earned second team all-region recognition from the coaches association.
A Millersville, Pa., native, Riggins anchored a Mountaineer defense that posted nine shutouts for the season and played a key role in helping junior goalkeeper Lana Bannerman claim the school record for career shutouts. A four-year starter, she tallied four assists as a senior. Riggins was a third team all-BIG EAST honoree in 2005.
Cicchini, a midfielder who has seen time with the full Canadian national team, started every match for West Virginia during her rookie campaign. The Oakville, Ontario, native scored her first collegiate goal in WVU’s 2-0 shutout of South Florida on Oct. 9, and earned second team all-BIG EAST honors in 2005.
Today’s announcement marks the fifth-straight season that at least one Mountaineer has earned regional recognition from the NSCAA.
